Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Rathranna

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Rathranna: a broken earthen ring, forty metres across, still stands on the east-facing slope. Bowman measured two such forts nearby in 1934; this one has given up most of its circle to the townland boundary. What remains is a low bank, high enough to mark the difference between field and forgotten room.
In pasture, on E-facing slope. Arc (C c. 40m) formed by earthen bank (int. H 1.4m; ext. H 1.4m) survives in townland boundary NW->E. Locally known as site of fort. One of two (CO023-251---) levelled single-ramparted forts (diam. c. 30yd and c. 35yd) described by Bowman (1934, 186) on lands of D. Daly. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
