Childrens Burial Ground

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Childrens Burial Ground occupies a rath in County Mayo, Ireland, where small low stones still protrude randomly across the south and west interior. The 1919 OS 6-inch map named the place without hesitation, suggesting the community still recognised the function decades after the stones stopped being tended. Perhaps mothers carried infants through rain to that protected circle, believing the ancient earth would hold what ordinary soil would not.
In a rath (MA082-012001-). The 1919 OS 6-inch map indicates a ‘Children’s Burial Ground’ at this rath. Small low stones protruding randomly from the ground in the S and W of the rath interior may mark graves. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 8 December 2021
