Custume Barracks

Terrace of four single-bay two-storey officer's houses with a two-bay two-storey officer's house to west end, built c.1820. Now in use as married soldier's quarters. Pitched natural slate roof with brick chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Built of dressed limestone with ashlar plinth and ashlar surrounds to openings. Square-headed window openings with six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows. Round-headed doorcases with timber panelled doors with spoke fanlights above. Road-fronted with limestone ashlar gateways with full entablatures and cast-iron lamp brackets to either end. The east arch has a series of pistol loops in the flanking walls. Located to northeast end of Custume Barracks complex.

An attractive and original terrace of officer's houses that retain their original form, character and fabric. They were built as individual houses for officers and are an interesting accommodation type in a military complex where communal accommodation is the norm. They are well-built in fine limestone masonry, if plain and modest in scale, and are an integral part of an important collection of military buildings within Custume Barracks.
