Srah Castle

Ruins

What is recorded here

John Briscoe raised Srah Castle in 1588 as a four-storey tower house with walls thick enough to swallow a musket ball and bartizans projecting like stone claws over the flat Offaly landscape. Its third floor opened onto a hidden mural passage and guard rooms, allowing defenders to watch invaders while remaining unseen. A later domestic wing suggests the family eventually lived there in peace, but the castle still leans into ruin with half a doorway and no floors, preserving the shape of fear rather than comfort.
Srah Castle is recorded as a ruins in County Offaly. Its open map record supplies this location and any linked names or public references.
