Newabbey House

Detached five-bay single-storey former gate lodge, c.1900, on a H-shaped plan retaining original fenestration comprising three-bay single-storey central block with single-bay single-storey gabled projecting end bays having three-bay side elevations to north and to south with single-bay single-storey gabled projecting bay to south and forming single-bay single-storey returns to rear to east. Now in private residential use. Gable-ended roofs on a H-shaped plan with slate (gabled to projecting bay to south). Clay ridge tiles. Rendered chimney stacks. Timber eaves and bargeboards on consoles (forming ‘open pediments’ to gables). Cast-iron rainwater goods. Rendered walls. Painted. Vermiculated rendered quoins to corners. Square-headed openings. Stone sills. Some with hood mouldings over. Timber casement windows. Glazed timber panelled door. Overlight. Set back from road in grounds shared with Newberry House with avenue to house to south.

This gate lodge is a fine building of unusual size that forms part of a neat self-contained group with the gateway to south-west (11819034/KD-28-19-34) and part of a larger group with the remainder of the buildings forming the Newberry House estate. The gate lodge is of some social and historic interest, attesting to the extensive nature of the estate. Classically detailed, mirroring the appearance of the main house, the house incorporates attractive features such as the vermiculated rendered quoins and timber bargeboards to the gables forming open bed ‘pediments’. The house has been very well maintained and presents an early aspect with original features and materials, including timber fenestration and a slate roof. The house is an attractive feature off the side of the road and, together with the gateway, terminates the vista of the road leading out of Kilcullen from the south-east.
