Rock-cut passages beneath Dunluce Castle reveal hands shaping living stone before the castle rose. The cliff-edge ruins belong to several ages, yet the hidden passage suggests people moved through the mountain itself when storms closed the coast. That is the shape of the place: a castle built above, a tunnel dug below, and a sea wall between them.

Dunluce Castle was built by the MacDonnell clan in the 15th century and later held by the Montgomery family after the 1609 Plantation of Ulster. It is important as a prominent example of a cliff-top medieval stronghold in Northern Ireland and for its dramatic rock-cut features, including an underground passage.
