What is recorded here
Ogham Stones is an ogham stone (present location) in Mountmelleray, County Waterford, Ireland. This specific slate slab, which is one of five stones from the Kilgrovan church site, is displayed in the Buaille na gCuimhnte exhibition at Mount Melleray Abbey. The stone measures 1.8 metres in length, 0.53 metres in width, and 0.15 metres in thickness. Macalister read the inscription as an ogham text, noting that many vowel notches are lost and that missing letters were restored based on the spaces available.
Five ogham stones from the church site of Kilgrovan (WA031-045001-) are presently displayed in the Buaille na gCuimhnte - Corner of Memories - exhibition at Mount Melleray Abbey. This stone (see WA031-045004-) has been recorded as slate (see dims. 1.8m x 0.53m; T 0.15m) and the inscription has been read by Macalister (1945, 283-4, no. 288) as: DEBRAN[I] MAQI ELTI [A]V[I] [O]GA[TO]S. However, he notes that many of the vowel notches, in particular, are lost and that missing letters have been 'restored by a consideration of the spaces available'. (Moore 1999, 1493)
