What is recorded here
The graveyard in Mortlestown (Mortlestown parish) is in County Tipperary, Ireland. It surrounds a centrally placed church on an east-facing slope and measures about 50 metres north to south and 52 metres east to west. All visible headstones date from the 18th century and lie south of the church, with one exception to the east. Limestone architectural fragments, including chamfered jambs and a curving doorway head, are embedded along the external north face of the surviving wall.
Church (TS076-027001-) roughly centrally placed in a irregularly shaped graveyard (dims. Approx. 50m N-S; 52m E-W), on an E facing slope in gently undulating terrain with pasture surround the graveyard. Graveyard under lush grass at time of inspection. All visible headstones are of 18th-century date and are placed to S of the church, with only one exception to E of church. Along external N face of the surviving wall architectural fragments have been placed, all limestone. These consist of chamfered jambs from doors or windows and the curving headstones of a doorway, with chamfered edge; broken ogee-head of window with plain chamfer. Rubble has been dumped at E end of this wall and the whole is grass-covered obscuring the original wall width. Internal wall face of S wall survives up to two courses high. Incorporated in the inner face of the W gate pier at the entrance to the graveyard is a chamfered jamb, no doubt from the church. The enclosing stone wall is surmounted and largely obscured by thorn bushes.
