Field system in Morett

Field system

What is recorded here

Morett holds a hidden field system where bowl furnaces and charcoal pits still mark the ground. Eamonn Cotter uncovered the site beneath the future M7 Heath-Mayfield motorway, revealing that people once smelted or made tools there before roads took the land. The flat earth keeps heat and purpose long after the makers have vanished.
New monument uncovered during excavation by Eamonn Cotter under licence number 03E0461 in advance of the M7 Heath-Mayfield motorway scheme. Area A which was excavated revealed two prominent field boundaries, an area of activity associated with post holes, a bowl furnace and a charcoal production pit (Bennett 2006, 293). Area B was on the flat ground c. 20m E of area A. A group of bowl furnaces was excavated here, as well as a pit which was probably used to produce charcoal for the furnace (Bennett 2006, 293).
