Donore Castle is a twelve-metre tower house on the north bank of the Boyne, built in the 1430s when Henry VI paid ten pounds for each defensive tower raised along the Pale. The Mac Eochagáin lived inside its rounded corners and vaulted rooms, watching the river until Cromwellian forces took the castle in 1650 and killed over forty family members. Carved heads of a king and bishop still face the doorway, silent witnesses to the violence that ended a local line.
