Bartragh Island is a sandy islet in Killala Bay, County Mayo, reachable on foot only when the tide pulls back. Captain Charles Kirkwood built a U-shaped house there in the 1830s to resist the maritime environment, but three men smashed 156 panes of glass in 1837 because he sold mutton below market price in Killala. A storm in 1843 stranded six fishing men near the island; four reached the house safely, while one died after servants ferried him back. Kirkwood lost his mind in 1849 and died in a Dublin asylum in 1859, leaving the island to his son and later to Claud Arthur Kirkwood, who lived there alone.
