Coolcran Fort

Archaeological place

What is recorded here

Coolcran Fort in Killacorraun, County Mayo, is a roughly circular earthen enclosure measuring about thirty-three metres across, built on a rising slope where the southern boundary stands two metres high while the northern edge barely clears half a metre. The builders compensated the falling ground with piled earth, creating a level interior platform beside a stream fifty metres south, while a slumped eastern gap hints at the original entrance. Faint cultivation ridges still cross the grass, proving the ancient defense became ordinary farming long before modern fences pressed the old scarp into a property boundary.
Coolcran Fort is recorded as a archaeological place in County Mayo. Its open map record supplies this location and any linked names or public references.
