Bunacrower Castle

Bunacrower Castle stands as a medieval tower house in County Mayo, its northern wall still rising six metres above the pastureland where lords once held court. The surviving footprint reveals a substantial fortification anchored in an irregular defensive bawn, flanked by smaller domestic or storage buildings whose foundations now peek through the grass. Time has reduced much of the structure to rubble, yet the windswept mound preserves the ghostly outline of a turbulent past, inviting visitors to imagine the soldiers who kept watch and the families who lived within its walls.
