Rathmore

Rathmore is a village at the western edge of the Wicklow Mountains in County Kildare, Ireland, where the name means “big fort” and the land still carries that shape. It stood at the southwest corner of the English Pale, a border place where settlement and defence were the same act, and its townlands keep older names like Newtown, Nunsland and Philipstown. People may have lived there in fear, pride or ordinary habit, but the fort-like name suggests the land was never neutral: it was made to be seen, guarded and remembered.
