Rathbeg

Rathbeg is a small ringfort in Gortnahurra, County Mayo, where the Irish word ráth still names a circular enclosure that once held a household, a herd, or a quiet local life. The suffix beg suggests modesty rather than grandeur, fitting a Mayo landscape crowded with hundreds of similar earthworks, some worn flat by rain and ploughs, others emerging only when low light stretches their shadows. It may have been a farm, a shelter, or a boundary marker for neighbours, but the ground no longer explains itself without imagination.
