Knocknaglogh Fort

Knocknaglogh Fort in Newtown, County Mayo, is a low oval earthwork roughly twenty-five metres across that local tradition identifies as a children's burial ground rather than a military stronghold. The site sits tucked into the north-west corner of a damp pasture, hemmed by fences and overshadowed by nearby plantation, while its weakened bank has been further buried under heaps of cleared field boulders. That marginal, half-hidden setting fits the sorrowful purpose attributed to it: a place set aside for those young lives excluded from consecrated ground.
