Elgans Fort

Archaeological place

What is recorded here

Elgans Fort is an early medieval rath in County Mayo where a personal name has survived longer than the person itself. The oval earthwork still stands half-choked by gorse and cleared stone, its western bank rising above a faint ghost ditch while removed field boundaries vanish into one open pasture. A short distance away, another rath and a wedge tomb suggest this corner of Mayo has been inhabited since before memory began.
Elgans Fort is recorded as a archaeological place in County Mayo. Its open map record supplies this location and any linked names or public references.
