Man-made underground passage in Cloddagh (sherkin Island)

On Sherkin Island between Cooney Harbour and NW shore. Discovered initially c. 1849. Donovan (1979, 37-39) records six earth-cut subrectangular chambers with barrel-vaulted ceilings. Stone built wall end chamber 6 revealed shaft when removed. Human skeleton said to have been found near entrance at time of discovery. Exact location not known. Regarded as separate site to Man-made underground passage (CO149-029---) by MCCarthy (1977, 313). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
