Man-made underground passage in Carrickallan

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Site discovered in 1903 (CLAJ 1904, 39, fig. 5). Consists of a passage extending NW-SE with drop-hole giving access to a second passage with expanded terminal/chamber, at lower level, extending roughly N-S. Drystone-built throughout. (Total L c. 14.7m.) Site now inaccessible. (CLAJ 1961, 10)
