What is recorded here

Half a metre of pale limestone rises from the Mainham graveyard, its thin edge catching the last of the afternoon light. A ringed Latin cross is cut into the east face, large enough to mark a life but simple enough to hide the hands that made it. The stone has stood through rain and forgetting, waiting for someone to read the silence inside the lines.

In a graveyard (KD014-006002-). A broad, thin and gently tapering limestone slab (H 1.17m; Wth at top 0.73m; Wth at base 0.61m; T 0.008-0.10m) has a simple ringed Latin cross incised on its E face (H 0.97m; Wth 0.41m; diam. of ring 0.11m). Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011

Probably dates to the early medieval period, associated with Christian burial practices. The cross may have marked a grave or served as a boundary marker with spiritual significance.
