What is recorded here

Indicated is a rectangular graveyard beside the parish church of Loughcrew in County Meath, Ireland. Masonry walls about three metres high still mark its edges, enclosing roughly fifty-four metres east-west and forty-three to fifty metres north-south. Dopping’s Visitation records that the church, chancel and graveyard were repaired or walled between 1682 and 1685, suggesting a community proud enough to keep its dead separate from the fields.

The parish church of Loughcrew (ME015-027----) is within a rectangular graveyard (dims c. 54m E-W; c. 43-50m N-S) defined by masonry walls (H c. 3m) and, according to Dopping’s Visitation (1682-5) the church and chancel were repaired and the graveyard was walled at that time (Ellison 1975, 10).
