One chambered crannog still stands in Killala Bay, County Mayo. It is one of the last surviving examples of an ancient lake-dwelling in Ireland. The chamber is about 3.5 metres across and has a narrow entrance passage. The rocks may have marked a boundary, a trading place or a sacred meeting point. People may have lived there, buried their dead nearby or simply remembered the site as a place of power. The chamber remains visible today, preserved by water and time.
