Indicated is a crannog in County Mayo, Ireland. It is an artificial island, usually built of stones, branches and soil, raised above water so people could live, keep animals or hide when danger came. The name gives no further detail, but the form is clear: a small made land where human hands changed the edge of a lake or marsh.
