Indicated

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a ruined fairy fort on a high Cavan drumlin, its circular shadow flattened by modern field boundaries. It may have been a human home before becoming a fairy trap, luring travellers with false warmth before swallowing them into the earth. The land still remembers the shape of the fort even when the stones no longer show it.
Marked 'Fort' on OS 1836 and 1876 eds. Situated just S of the summit of a high drumlin ridge in pasture-land. A much-disturbed, slightly raised, formerly circular area (int. diam. 29.9m) enclosed by a very slight earthen bank from S-SSW. Elsewhere the plan of the site has been much distorted by the erection of modern field boundaries. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
