Glebe Castle is a compact three-storey tower house at the south-western edge of medieval Limerick, built from evenly coursed slaty limestone with walls nearly 2 metres thick. Its small 6.4 by 4 metre chamber, corner quoins, stepped gables and wall chimneys suggest a defensible family home rather than a grand lordly seat. The castle remained occupied into the nineteenth century, and its modern roof still helps preserve a vivid fragment of Ireland’s turbulent medieval landscape.
