Moirdeartach O'Brien built Dysert Castle in the fifteenth century, raising a four-storey tower with walls thick enough to resist both siege and storm. Sixty-eight spiral steps still climb beside the entrance, past arrow slits and a murder hole, to a roofless top where ivy hides a dangerous gap in the vaulted ceiling. The O'Brien line may have held it before Wingfield and others, but the castle no longer answers to any name. It stands unchanged in Barrigone fields, waiting for nobody, which is perhaps why it feels alive.
