Dooroy Castle

Half-buried in bramble and moss on a narrow tongue of land pushed into Lough Gill, Dooroy Castle keeps only one weathered wall from the tower house Brian O'Rourke began in 1582. That wall still stretches fifteen metres across the water's edge, thin as a shelf and no taller than a person, yet it preserves the shape of a rooms that once rose four storeys above the lake. To stand before it is to imagine O'Rourke watching boats pass, hearing water strike stone, and knowing that London's reach was already stretching toward Breifne. The castle did not outlive him; it waited, shrinking by degrees until the lake and vegetation took back most of what he built.
