Bartholomew Mosse transformed a cramped Dublin theatre into a lifeline for mothers, then staged plays and built pleasure gardens to fund the Rotunda Hospital. He drained his own purse for the work, fled creditors through a window, and vanished into Wales rather than watch the dream collapse. The hospital still stands because one stubborn surgeon refused to accept that women must birth in darkness.
