What is recorded here

One corner of a lost church still stands beside the modern building, while a small cross marks the northern edge of the sandhill enclosure. The place has kept its shape through burial, worship and forgetting. What is missing is easier to imagine than what remains: a room, a door, a voice in it.

A short right-angled stretch of masonry in the graveyard (DG004-005003-) adjacent to the modern church seems to be all that survives of a pre-17th century church (DG004-005001-) here. A small stone cross (DG004-005002-) stands to the N of these remains. It is situated in a natural enclosure of the sandhills to the N of the channel to Trawbreaga Bay. Just outside the door of the modern church is a painted stone font (DG004-007-), hexagonal in shape, c. 0.5m across with a hollow .3m in diameter and 0.2m deep. It is believed to have originally come from Fahan (DG038-013001-). The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal.
