Fort Eliza stands seventy metres from the Shannon, yet a 16th century window head slept inside its 19th century guns. The ogee curve and glazing groove suggest the fragment travelled from Béal Átha Ludh Castle, but the fort and castle never shared one visible life. Vegetation hid the window until people pulled back the green, forcing two centuries to occupy the same chamber at last.

The head (dims. L 0.76m; H 0.29-0.36m; T 0.17m) of a 16th century two-light (ope Wth 0.25m) ogee-headed window with stepped or sunken spandrels and glazing groove was uncovered during recent clearance of vegetation inside the 19th century artillery fortification, Fort Eliza. This fortification was constructed 70m S of the Shannon River and 480m W of the historic town of Banagher (OF021-003----). Fort Falkland (OF021-003007-) a 17th century fortification built on the site of Banagher Castle (OF021-003010-) lies 270m to NE with medieval parish church ruins (OF021-003001-) 580m to NW. It is possible that this artillery fortification was built on the site of the Béal Átha Ludh Castle (OF021-010---). The window fragment may have come from this castle.
