Prison in Kilmainham

Prison

What is recorded here

Kilmainham Lane once held a prison beside the priory around 1330, though its exact spot has been lost. It may have been a small cage for priests, thieves or debtors, its wall buried under later building. The lane still passes the place where confinement and faith touched, but the earth has taken back the marker.
Clarke mentions the former existence of a prison on the N side of Kilmainham Lane which was mentioned c. 1330 in association with Kilmainham Priory (DU018-020286-) (2002, 23). The precise location of this prison on Kilmainham Lane has not been identified. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 4 July 2023
