What is recorded here
Grave Yd. holds two burial vaults, one dedicated to the Virgin Mary and built in 1779 by Thady Flaherty, parish priest. The northern chamber remains intact with a cut-stone door surround that may reuse stones taken from the ruined church beside it. Gravel now covers the graves, but the wall, vaults and scattered slabs still mark the shape of the old place on the damp rise above the Pollagh River.
Located on a slight rise in lowlying damp pasture on the W bank of the Pollagh River, 240m S of its confluence with the Glore and Gwestion Rivers.
A trapezoidal area (40.6m E−W; 31.75m N−S at W, 41.3m N−S at E) enclosed by a mortared stone wall. The entrance is in the centre of the S wall, with a short avenue linking the graveyard to a minor road at S. There is a ruined church (MA071-169001-) in the centre of the W half, with one table tomb and several graves slabs dating to the 18th- and 19th-centuries in the interior. There is a preponderance of recumbant slabs, with inscriptions dating to the 18th-and 19th-centuries, in the S half of the graveyard, and a concentration of low, informal uninscribed stone gravemarkers in the N half. In the E half of the graveyard, there are two adjacent rectangular burial vaults. The northern chamber (4.1m N−S; 5.25m E−W; H 2.5m) is the best preserved, with a cut-stone door surround that may reuse stones taken from the church. The southern chamber is ruined; an inscribed stone indicates that it is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and was built in 1779 by Thady Flaherty, parish priest.
The ground surface of the graveyard was gravelled-over during a Fás scheme in the second half of the late 20th-century.
