Killedan Church

On a slight rise or platform in the W half of a graveyard (MA071-169002), located on the W bank of the Pollagh River, 240m S of its confluence with the Glore and Gwestion Rivers. Ruined, roofless rectangular building (16.85m ESE−WNW; 8.5m NNW−SSE) with walls (T c. 1.1m) constructed of mortared random rubble still standing to a height of c. 3m. The 1838 OS Letters recorded that at the church was in a very bad state of preservation: ‘The doorway on the south side wall near the west gable has now become a breach...There was a window in this wall near the east gable which is now broken at top and battered on each side outwardly.’ (O’Flanagan 1927, 389-390 (160)). A Fás scheme undertook extensive works here in the late 20th-century, including repointing of the walls and reconstruction of doors and windows. These features appear now as follows: Round arched doorway with drawbar sockets on either side, located towards W end of S wall; narrow pointed arched doorway (Wth 0.61m; H 1.73) in the N wall; window (Wth 0.26m; H 0.89m) with cut-stone surround and ogee-head in an inwardly-splayed embrasure, at E end of S wall; window (Wth 0.29m; H 1.25m) in E gable with cut-stone surround in a broad inwardly-splayed embrasure. There are 18th and 19th-century graves in the church interior, including one table tomb and several graves slabs. The ground surface is overspread with gravel.
