Killavoy Grave Yard is a D-shaped burial ground on a south-facing slope in County Cork, Ireland, where a fulacht fiadh still occupies most of the east side. The field is called Pairc na Cille, a holy well sits at the south edge, and small boulders scattered through the overgrown ground may be the remains of about eight short headstones. People may have chosen this place because clean water, open sky and ancient fire all met on one slope, making death feel like a continuation of ordinary life rather than an end to it.
In pasture, on S-facing slope. Roughly D-shaped area (c. 55m NNE-SSW; projecting c. 25m to ESE) enclosed by linear stone-built field fence (H 1.25m) on WNW side; defined by flow of water, and overgrowth NNE->SSW. Interior uneven, overgrown and sloping downhill to SSW; S half raised somewhat to compensate for hillslope; fulacht fiadh (11050) takes up most of E side; heap of stones and boulders to S of fulacht fiadh. Remainder of interior overgrown and uneven. Scattering of small boulders in S half may be remains of 'about 8 small headstones from 6 ins - 11 ins in height [which] mark the sites of graves' (Bowman 1934, 226). Field in which site occurs called 'Pairc na Cille' (ibid.). Holy well (14006) on perimeter to S. Levelled circular enclosure (13579) adjoins E perimeter of site.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
