What is recorded here

Ballyshannon Castle lost a room, but Kildare kept its fire. The Fitzgerald mantelpiece from 1619 still stands there, carrying a ghost of a house that no longer exists. It is not decoration; it is displaced memory. A building can vanish while one of its parts refuses to forget.
According to Bradley et al. (1986 vol. 3, 254), this is a Fitzgerald mantelpiece, dated 1619, which came from Ballyshannon Castle (KD028-058001-). Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 9February 2012
