Sir Charles Coote had built a wooden bridge connecting Jamestown with Co. Roscommon by 1622-3 which is depicted on the Down Survey (1655-6) map of 1657 and was still extant in 1683. It crossed the River Shannon at the S end of Jamestown, but by 1730 it had been replaced by a stone bridge (LE031-082008-). The present bridge appears to be a 19th century construction built by the Commission for the improvement of the Shannon Navigation. (Bradley and Dunne 1988b, 22-3).
