Star Castle is an eight-pointed fortress on St Mary's, built in 1593 by Robert Adams and Francis Godolphin to watch for Spanish ships after the Armada. Abraham Tovey later shaped its walls into circular gun batteries, including Colonel Boscawen's Battery, while invalid troops kept the remote outpost alive. It has become a hotel, yet the powder magazine and outer defences still stand as Grade I listed structures at the heart of the island's western defence.

Star Castle was built in the late 16th century by Sir Richard Grenville as a defensive structure to protect the Isles of Scilly from pirate attacks. It is remembered for its strategic role in the defense of the southwestern approaches to England and for its association with Grenville, a prominent Elizabethan naval commander.
