Inishcaltra is a small island off Clare where a saint’s graveyard still holds stones marked by time. One irregular slab lies in the east half, close to the wall and beside another marked grave. It has no name, no date, no carving except the rough shape of age. People may have laid someone there in confidence, believing the island itself would remember. The sea has kept that promise longer than any human hand could have.

Situated in the E half of the ‘Saint’s graveyard’ (CL029-009030-) on Inis Cealtra. This slab (L 0.69m; Wth 0.49m) is not depicted on Macalister’s plan of the graveyard (1916-17, pl. XV) but it lies immediately W of his no. 64 (CL029-009099-),11.65m from the N wall and 3.1m from the E wall of the graveyard. The slab is irregularly shaped and has a rough uneven surface. Christian burial slab, early medieval period (c. 7th–10th century). The slab is significant as part of the sacred landscape of Inis Cealtra, a historically important monastic site associated with St. Brendan.
