Infants Burial Ground.

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Inside an ancient ringfort at Eastwell, a small rectangular patch of ground holds the unnamed graves of unbaptised infants. Families excluded by church rules chose this liminal space instead, laying children to rest among moss-covered stones oriented east to west. The ringfort predates Christian burial practice, yet it became a vessel for grief that official doctrine would not acknowledge. Locals still call it a cillín, keeping alive a memory that no register or date has ever captured.
Within a ringfort (GA098-099----). An unenclosed rectangular CBG (N-S 23.7m, E-W 8.6m), in fair condition, within which a number of moss-covered set stones indicate graves oriented E-W. Known locally as a CBG. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
A Christian burial ground, likely medieval in date, associated with a ringfort; its significance lies in the rare association of a formal burial ground with a prehistoric defensive structure.
