Healthfield House

Detached two-bay single-storey gate lodge, extant 1903, on an L-shaped plan with single-bay single-storey gabled projecting end bay. Extended, 1995, producing present composition. Pitched slate roof on an L-shaped plan with trefoil-perforated crested terracotta ridge tiles, rendered central chimney stack on rendered base having corbelled stepped capping, quatrefoil-perforated timber bargeboads to gables on paired "Cavetto"-detailed timber purlins with timber finials to apexes, and cast-iron rainwater goods on timber eaves boards on exposed timber rafters retaining cast-iron downpipes. Rendered, ruled and lined walls. Square-headed window openings with cut-granite sills, and concealed dressings framing two-over-two timber sash windows. Set back from line of road at entrance to grounds of Healthfield House.

A gate lodge not only contributing positively to the group and setting values of the Healthfield House estate, but also clearly illustrating the continued development or "improvement" of the estate by Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Jervis Jervis-White JP (1842-1909) with the architectural value of the composition, one recalling a contemporary gate lodge at Park House (see 15607035), suggested by such attributes as the compact angular plan form; and the decorative timber work embellishing the roofline. Having been well maintained, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the original fabric, both to the exterior and to the interior, thus upholding the character or integrity of a gate lodge forming part of a self-contained group alongside an adjacent gateway (see 15703714) with the resulting ensemble making a pleasing visual statement in a sylvan street scene.
