Marlay House

Detached three-bay two-storey head gardener's house, extant 1837, on a rectangular plan with two-bay two-storey side elevations; three-bay two-storey rear (west) elevation. Renovated to accommodate alternative use. Replacement hipped slate roof with clay ridge tiles, slate hung chimney stacks having concrete capping supporting crested terracotta pots, and uPVC rainwater goods on timber eaves boards on slightly overhanging box eaves having paired timber consoles. Replacement rendered battered walls on rendered chamfered plinth with rendered band to eaves. Square-headed off-central opposing door openings with concealed dressings framing replacement timber boarded or tongue-and-groove timber panelled doors. Square-headed window openings with cut-granite sills, and rendered "bas-relief" surrounds framing replacement four-over-four timber sash windows having part exposed sash boxes. Set in landscaped grounds shared with Marlay House.

A house contributing positively to the group and setting values of the Marlay House estate with the architectural value of the composition suggested by such attributes as the compact rectilinear plan form off-centred on restrained doorcases; the somewhat disproportionate bias of solid to void in the massing compounded by the uniform or near-uniform proportions of the openings on each floor; and the monolithic timber work embellishing the roofline. Having been successfully restored following a prolonged period of unoccupancy in the later twentieth century, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the original or sympathetically replicated fabric, thus upholding the character or integrity of a house having historic connections with a succession of gardeners including Robert Russell (1863-1905), 'Gardener' (NA 1901); and Thomas John Discon (1874-1939), 'Gardener' (NA 1911).
