What is recorded here
Death and memory belong to Cloghala, Scart and Dungarvan. The churchyard is no longer visible, but the place still carries the shape of what was lost there.
This is listed in the SMR (1987) as 'Graveyard' based on information in the terrier accompanying the Down Survey (1655-6) parish map of Dungarvan which notes, 'on Cloghlea a large castle in repaire and the ruins of a church or abbey'. According to Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 419), 'An obsolete churchyard is still pointed out in the townland [Cloghala], at a moat or rath immediately to the left of the public road from Dungarvan to Tullaherin. This must have been the site of the ruins of the "church or abbey"' mentioned in the Down Survey. The 17th-century townland of Cloghlea extended N and S of Dungarvan village, consisting of the modern townland of Cloghala N of the village and mainly Scart townland SE of the village, though also Dungarvan. The church (KK024-069002-/KK024-068003-) referred to in the Down Survey is unlocated within these townlands.
