What is recorded here
Grave Yard on Scattery Island holds burials from 1810 to 1999 inside a low masonry wall on the eastern shore. Most headstones have disappeared, leaving flat stones, seedbare earth and the medieval church Templenamarve as the main markers of time. The sea has taken its share, because human remains were still visible beyond the graveyard boundary when the foreshore was surveyed in 2000. It remains a national monument, not a polished museum, but a place where the island keeps its dead without much explanation.
Situated on the E shore of Scattery Island, this graveyard comprises a trapezoidal area (dims. c. 52m E-W; 27-44m N-S) defined by a masonry wall (H c. 0.5-1m). The burials date from c. 1810 to 1999, but most of the headstones have been removed, especially in the area to the W of the church which has been seeded. Those to the S have been laid flat on the gravelled ground. A medieval church ‘Templenamarve’ (CL067-024010-) lies within and there are recumbent slabs inside the church. This is the only graveyard on the island where people from the mainland were also buried. A foreshore report in 2000 (00E0281) recorded human remains visible in the section immediately E of the graveyard. (Dunne 2003, 23, no. 94-5).
This is a national monument in state care, no. 10.
