Scattery Island in County Clare, Ireland, holds a ruined castle marked as national monument no. 10. The sea has taken much of its shape, leaving behind a reminder that the island once resisted the horizon rather than submitting to it.

Scattery Island Castle was built in the 15th or 16th century by the O'Brien dynasty, the ruling Gaelic family of Thomond. It is important as a rare example of a coastal defensive structure in the Burren region and as a site with long historical and monastic associations dating back to early Christian times.
