Fulacht fia in Grange (coolock By., Coolock Ed)

Pre-development testing in 2003 revealed the remains of a fulacht fia. This was situated in low-lying pasture at the base of a N facing slope, close to an area of persistent wetland. The site comprised three elements-an elongated pit which was clay-lined (L1.92m, Wth 0.97m, D 0.32m), a shallow sub-rectangular spread and a short linear feature thought to be a modern plough furrow. The pit was filled with heat-shattered stone and charcoal consistent with a burnt mound site. This site has been interpreted as a the remains of a ploughed-out fulacht fiadh (Elder, 2007, 92-3).
