What is recorded here

Indicated is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Grange (athlone South By.), County Roscommon, Ireland. The circular grass-covered area measures about forty metres across and keeps a five-metre-wide earthen bank at its eastern edge. A narrow entrance opens to the east while an old quarry marks the northern perimeter. Another rath and a barrow lie within one hundred and thirty metres on either side.

On a gently undulating landscape. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 40.2m E-W; 39.6m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (at E: Wth 5.7m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.1m) which is reduced to a scarp (H 0.9m) at N. There is no visible fosse but the entrance (Wth 3.3m) is at E, and there is an old quarry on the perimeter N-NE. Rath (RO045-127----) is c. 130m to the NNW and barrow (RO045-126002-) is c. 130m to the W. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
