Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Gortnaskeha

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortons and company built a fort at Gortnaskeha. They failed. The earth swallowed the stones and the name vanished from every map. What killed them is still buried under the grass, waiting for someone foolish enough to dig.
Marked on the 1841-42 and 1914-15 OS maps as a circular enclosure. On the later edition it would appear to have been cut in half by a fieldbank N-S; however, no surface trace of this site could be found. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 235. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
