Lisheen

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Lisheen is a children's burial ground beside a Galway ringfort, yet no grave, marker or dip remains visible. The name still carries the place while the field has taken back every line and shape that might have shown it. What is left is a charge of absence: children were set down here, forgotten by the soil, and the land continues to hold them without witness.
Associated with a ringfort (GA043-089----). Though named on OS 6-inch maps as 'Lisheen', suggesting the presence of a CBG, no visible surface trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
