Enclosure in Garranstan

Enclosure

What is recorded here

O’Kelly claimed one rath in Garranstan, yet neither map shows it. The quarry in the north may have deceived him, leaving the true enclosure hidden beneath grass or memory. Whatever vanished there, the land kept its secret while men drew lines around nothing.
According to O’Kelly (1969, 147) in Garranstan townland, there is ‘one rath’. There is no enclosure indicated on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map or the 1947 revision. A quarry, indicated by hachures on the 1947 revision, in the northern portion of the townland, may have been mistaken by O’Kelly as an enclosure. The location of a ‘rath’ in the townland is unknown.
