What is recorded here
Garraneduff holds a vanished chamber beneath a levelled rath, reachable only through memory because the ground above shows no scar. Local testimony describes a slab-covered mouth, a six-metre lintelled passage sloping north before curving south, and a small rectangular room built entirely of stone. That chamber may have served as a hiding place, a treasury or a dead man’s house, but its true purpose disappeared with its entrance.
On the N side of an E-W field boundary which crosses the interior of a levelled rath (CO039-091----). According to local information, an opening covered with slabs gave access to a lintelled passage (L c. 6m) which sloped down to the N and then curved back to the S. This passage led into a rectangular stone-built chamber (c. 1.2m E-W; c. 1.2m N-S), roofed with lintels. There are no visible remains of this Man-made underground passage at ground level.
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009).
